At a high level, there are three main thorns I'd like to draw your attention to.

The first, they can promote confusion, especially if there is an unclear mission or goal. If there are conflicting priorities with departments, if there is ad hoc resource allocation instead of a well-planned one, and if there is a focus on bureaucratic process over that goal delivery.

Number two, is that cross-functional teams can actually reveal fissures that might already exist within an organization, especially if there has been little prior investment in teamwork, team empowerment and communication conflict management skills.

And finally, the third thorn is that cross-functional teams can actually diminish an employee's experience.

By distancing them from their functional group, there can be a lack of cohesion to their original teammates, limited learning and growth opportunities around their functional skills as well.

In the next video, we will cover some best practices and final thoughts on cross-functional teams.
